Free resources: Stellarium (free desktop planetarium), Clear Outside (weather forecasting for astronomers), and the SkySafari free tier are excellent digital tools. Combined with a planisphere for field use, you have a complete sky-navigation toolkit for very little money.

Red Flashlight ($5-15)

A red-light flashlight (or a red filter over your phone's light) preserves your night vision while letting you read charts and set up equipment. White light destroys your dark adaptation in seconds and takes 20-30 minutes to recover. A dedicated red flashlight costs $5-15, or you can make one by covering a regular flashlight with red cellophane.
