Milky Way Photography: Camera Settings and Best Locations
There's something deeply moving about seeing the Milky Way arc across the sky with your own eyes. Photographing it takes that experience and makes it permanent, a single image that captures the vast, glowing band of our galaxy stretching from horizon to horizon. And the good news is that modern cameras have made Milky Way photography accessible to almost anyone with a DSLR or mirrorless camera and a reasonably fast wide-angle lens.
What You Need
Camera
Any DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual exposure controls and the ability to shoot RAW files will work. Full-frame sensors perform better in low light, but APS-C and Micro Four Thirds cameras produce excellent Milky Way images too. Even some high-end smartphone cameras can capture a recognizable Milky Way from a dark site.
Lens
This is where it matters most. You want:

- Wide angle: 14-24mm on full-frame (10-16mm on APS-C) to capture a large swath of sky.
- Fast aperture: f/2.8 or faster. f/1.8 or f/1.4 lenses gather significantly more light, resulting in cleaner images. The difference between f/2.8 and f/1.4 is four times more light, that's huge.
Popular choices include the Rokinon/Samyang 14mm f/2.8 (affordable, sharp, excellent value), the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art (premium quality), and the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 (great for APS-C).
Tripod
A sturdy tripod that doesn't vibrate in wind. You don't need anything fancy, a $50-80 aluminum tripod works fine. Just make sure it's stable enough that pressing the shutter button doesn't cause vibration (use a remote shutter release or the camera's self-timer).

The 500 Rule (and NPF Rule)
To avoid visible star trails, keep your shutter speed below:
Maximum shutter speed = 500 ÷ (focal length × crop factor)

For a 14mm lens on a full-frame camera: 500 ÷ 14 = ~35 seconds. For a 14mm lens on an APS-C camera (crop factor 1.5): 500 ÷ 21 = ~24 seconds.
Planning: When and Where
When, Milky Way Season
The photogenic galactic core (the bright, bulging center of the Milky Way in Sagittarius) is visible in the evening sky from roughly April through September in the Northern Hemisphere. The core rises highest in the summer months (June-August), making this the prime Milky Way photography season.
You also need a moonless night, or at least a night where the Moon sets early. Even a crescent Moon can wash out fainter Milky Way detail. Plan your shoots around the new Moon phase, giving yourself about a week-long window each month.
Where, Dark Skies
Light pollution is the biggest enemy of Milky Way photography. You need to get away from city lights. Use these resources to find dark sites:

- Light pollution maps: Websites like lightpollutionmap.info show Bortle scale ratings for any location. Aim for Bortle 4 or darker (you'll see a dramatic difference compared to suburban Bortle 6-7).
- Dark Sky Parks: The International Dark-Sky Association certifies parks with exceptional darkness. These are guaranteed good locations.
- Distance rule of thumb: Generally, you need to be at least 50-100 miles from a major city to reach truly dark skies.
Focusing in the Dark
Getting sharp focus is one of the trickiest parts of Milky Way photography. Your camera's autofocus won't work on stars. Here's the reliable method:
- Switch your lens to manual focus.
- Turn on live view on your camera's LCD screen.
- Point at a bright star or distant light and zoom in to maximum live view magnification (usually 10x).
- Carefully turn the focus ring until the star is the smallest, sharpest point you can achieve.
- Don't touch the focus ring for the rest of the session. Consider taping it in place with gaffer tape.
Basic Processing
Your raw Milky Way images straight from the camera will look dark and underwhelming. That's normal, all the detail is hiding in the RAW data. Basic processing steps:
- Import into Lightroom, Capture One, or a free alternative like RawTherapee.
- Increase exposure by 0.5-1.5 stops to brighten the Milky Way.
- Increase contrast and clarity to make the galactic structure pop.
- Adjust white balance until the sky color looks natural (usually cooler/bluer).
- Reduce noise, high-ISO images will have visible noise, especially in the dark sky areas.
- Boost vibrance or saturation slightly to bring out the natural colors in the Milky Way (gold, brown, blue, pink).
