Every August, Earth passes through a trail of debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle, and the result is one of the most anticipated astronomical events of the year: the Perseid meteor shower. At its peak, you can see 50 to 100 meteors per hour streaking across the sky, bright, fast, and often leaving persistent trails that hang in the air for seconds after the meteor itself has vanished.

The Perseids are the most-watched meteor shower for good reason. They peak during warm summer nights in the Northern Hemisphere, they're reliably prolific, and they produce a high percentage of bright fireballs.

When to Watch: Dates and Peak Timing

The Perseid meteor shower is active from roughly July 17 through August 24 each year, but the vast majority of activity occurs in a narrow window around the peak. Here are the key dates:

  • Activity begins: Mid-July. You might see a handful of Perseids per hour if you're paying attention.
  • Rates increase noticeably: August 5-8. Expect 15-25 meteors per hour during pre-dawn hours.
  • Peak night: Typically August 11-13 (the exact peak shifts slightly year to year). This is when you want to be outside. Rates can reach 80-100+ per hour under ideal conditions.
  • Rapid decline: After August 14, rates drop off quickly. By August 20, the shower has essentially ended.
2026 Perseid forecast: The 2026 Perseids peak on the night of August 11-12. The Moon will be a waning crescent, rising in the pre-dawn hours, which means excellent dark-sky conditions for most of the night. This is one of the best Perseid years in the current cycle. Don't miss it.

Meteor rates increase dramatically after midnight. Here's why: before midnight, your location on Earth faces away from the direction of Earth's orbital motion, so meteors have to "catch up" to hit the atmosphere. After midnight, you're on the leading side, plowing directly into the debris stream. The difference is substantial.

  • 10 PM - midnight: Expect perhaps 20-30 meteors per hour at peak. Many will be long, slow-moving "earthgrazers" that skim the atmosphere at shallow angles, these are often the most dramatic individual meteors.
  • Midnight - 2 AM: Rates climb to 40-60 per hour. Meteors become faster and more frequent.
  • 2 AM - dawn: Peak rates of 80-100+ per hour. This is the sweet spot. The radiant (the point in Perseus from which the meteors appear to originate) is high in the sky, and you're facing directly into the debris stream.
Patience tip: Meteor watching is not instant gratification. Even at peak rates, you might go 5-10 minutes without seeing one, then see three in rapid succession. Plan to spend at least an hour outside. Bring a reclining chair, a blanket, and something warm to drink. The meteors will come.

Where to Look in the Sky

A common misconception is that you should stare directly at the constellation Perseus (the radiant point). While meteors do appear to originate from that direction, the ones that streak closest to the radiant have short trails and are harder to see. The best strategy is to look about 45-90 degrees away from Perseus, toward whatever part of the sky is darkest from your location.

In practice, this means:

  1. Lie on your back or recline in a chair facing generally northeast to east.
  2. Let your gaze rest on a broad area of sky about halfway between the horizon and zenith.
  3. Don't focus on any particular star or point, use your peripheral vision to catch movement across a wide field.
  4. Your eyes need 15-20 minutes to fully dark-adapt. Avoid looking at your phone (use a red flashlight app if you must check the time).

Choosing Your Viewing Location

Location makes an enormous difference. From a city, you might see 5-10 Perseids per hour. From a truly dark site, that same night could yield 100+. Here's what to prioritize:

  • Darkness: Get as far from city lights as you can. Even driving 30-45 minutes from a suburb to a rural area can double or triple your meteor count.
  • Open sky: You want as much unobstructed sky as possible. A hilltop, open field, or lakeshore is ideal. Trees and buildings block the lower portions of the sky where some of the longest meteor trails appear.
  • Northern horizon: While you don't need to see the northern horizon specifically, having a clear view of the northeast (where Perseus rises) helps in the early evening hours.
  • Comfort: You'll be outside for hours. Choose a location where you can set up chairs, spread out blankets, and be comfortable. A nearby car provides a warm-up retreat.

What Causes the Perseids?

The Perseids are caused by debris from Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, a comet with a 133-year orbital period. Every time Swift-Tuttle passes through the inner solar system, solar heating causes it to shed dust, ice particles, and small rocky fragments. These particles spread out along the comet's orbit, forming a broad tube of debris.

Each August, Earth's orbit carries us through this debris stream. The particles, most no larger than a grain of sand, slam into our upper atmosphere at about 59 km/s (roughly 132,000 mph). At that speed, even a tiny grain compresses and heats the air in front of it to thousands of degrees, creating the bright streak of light we see as a meteor. The particle itself usually vaporizes completely at altitudes of 80-100 km above the ground.

The "shooting stars" you see are not stars at all. They're flecks of comet dust, some of them thousands of years old, completing a journey that began far beyond the orbit of Pluto and ends as a brief flash of light in Earth's atmosphere.

Perspective moment: Comet Swift-Tuttle's nucleus is about 26 km across, roughly the same size as the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. It's technically the largest object in the solar system that makes repeated close passes to Earth. But don't worry: its orbit is well-understood, and it won't come dangerously close to Earth for at least the next 2,000 years.

Photographing the Perseids

Meteor photography is one of the most accessible forms of astrophotography. You don't need a telescope or tracking mount, just a camera capable of long exposures, a wide-angle lens, and a tripod.

  • Camera settings: Use a wide-angle lens (14-24mm), aperture wide open (f/2.8 or faster), ISO 3200-6400, and 15-25 second exposures. Longer exposures increase your chance of capturing a meteor in any given frame.
  • Composition: Include some foreground (trees, horizon, a building) to give scale and context. A meteor alone against featureless sky is less compelling than one arcing over a landscape.
  • Technique: Use an intervalometer to take continuous exposures all night. You'll take hundreds of frames. Most will be empty; the few with meteors will make it worthwhile.
  • Fireballs: Exceptionally bright meteors (fireballs) can be captured even with shorter exposures and lower ISO. Some are bright enough to photograph with a smartphone.
