Double Stars: The Easiest Targets You're Overlooking
If you own a telescope and you've never deliberately observed a double star, you're missing out on some of the most satisfying views the sky has to offer. Double stars are bright, they're everywhere, they work from light-polluted cities, and some of them display color contrasts so vivid that you'll wonder why nobody told you about them sooner.
What Are Double Stars?
A double star is exactly what it sounds like: two stars that appear very close together in the sky. There are two flavors:
- True binary stars: Two stars that are gravitationally bound and orbiting each other. They're a real physical pair, and studying them helps astronomers measure stellar masses.
- Optical doubles: Two stars that appear close together from our perspective but are actually at vastly different distances. They're a chance alignment, not a real pair.
From an observing standpoint, both types can be beautiful. The visual appeal comes from splitting the pair, resolving what looks like a single star into two distinct points of light, and from the color contrasts that many pairs display.
The Best Double Stars to Start With
These are widely considered the finest double stars in the sky, and every one of them is easy to find:

How to Split Double Stars
Splitting a double star means using enough magnification that your telescope resolves the pair into two distinct points. Here's how:
- Start at low magnification to center the star in your field of view.
- Increase magnification gradually. Wide pairs (20″+ separation) split easily at 50-80x. Tight pairs (under 5″) may need 150-300x.
- Wait for steady seeing. Atmospheric turbulence affects tight doubles more than almost any other target. If the star is boiling and shimmering, wait for a calm moment.
- Use averted vision for doubles with a faint companion. Look slightly to the side of the primary star and the dimmer companion may pop into view.
Your telescope's resolving power depends on its aperture. The Dawes limit, the theoretical minimum separation your scope can split, is roughly 116/D arcseconds, where D is your aperture in millimeters. A 100mm (4-inch) scope can split pairs down to about 1.2 arcseconds.
Why Double Stars Are Perfect for Urban Observers
Here's the often-overlooked advantage: double stars are point sources. Unlike nebulae and galaxies, their visibility isn't degraded by light pollution. A double star looks essentially the same from a light-polluted backyard as it does from a dark-sky site. If you live in a city and can't easily travel to dark skies, double stars give you something genuinely beautiful to observe from home.
They're also quick targets. You don't need to spend an hour tracking down a faint fuzzy. Point your scope at a known double, crank up the magnification, and enjoy the view. A double-star session can fill 30 minutes or an entire evening, depending on your mood.
Building a Double Star Observing List
The six doubles listed above are just the beginning. There are hundreds of showpiece doubles scattered across every season's sky. Some observers keep a dedicated logbook of doubles they've split, noting colors, separation difficulty, and observing conditions. It becomes a rewarding long-term project, especially because some doubles have orbital periods short enough that their separation changes noticeably over years or decades.
